Why go
Jakarta’s sea connections serve two very different trips. A passage from another Indonesian island brings you into the working port of Tanjung Priok; an island break off the Jakarta coast may involve Marina Ancol. Knowing which waterfront you need helps you arrange the right pickup and avoid treating the two as interchangeable.
The full story
Tanjung Priok, in North Jakarta, is the arrival point to look for when considering an inter-island passenger ship. PELNI connects Jakarta with other parts of the Indonesian archipelago, but the useful question is whether a particular sailing serves your origin on your travel date. Check the route and arrival details through PELNI before arranging the land journey into Jakarta. Marina Ancol belongs to a different kind of sea trip: smaller boats heading to the Thousand Islands, also called Kepulauan Seribu. If you are returning from an island stay, ask which mainland pier your boat uses before arranging a driver. A booking described simply as “Jakarta” leaves too much unresolved. Keep the name of the port, the passenger meeting point and your hotel address together so the boat journey and the city transfer meet at the same place.
Useful to know
- For a Tanjung Priok arrival, confirm the passenger exit and pickup point with the ship operator.
- For a Thousand Islands trip, confirm the mainland pier for both legs; do not assume every boat uses Ancol.
