Merdeka Palace
View Merdeka Palace from permitted public surroundings for a glimpse of Jakarta’s presidential architecture. Its portico faces Monas, placing executive power beside the capital’s independence monument.
Completed in 1879, the former colonial governor-general’s residence links Batavia with the Indonesian republic. Renamed Merdeka, meaning freedom, in 1949, it carries that transition in its name. The ceremonial facade and its relationship with Merdeka Square make an exterior look worthwhile for understanding how national authority occupies this part of Jakarta.
