Sunda Kelapa Harbour
Visit Sunda Kelapa for Jakarta’s maritime origins and traditional trading vessels. The experience centres on observing a working harbour from the areas where visitors are permitted.
The former port of the Sunda Kingdom of Pajajaran connects Jakarta’s origins with inter-island trade. Wooden vessels give that history a visible form, making this a different experience from the museums around Fatahillah Square. It suits an interest in working waterfronts, provided you follow the port’s boundaries rather than expecting an open promenade.
What to look for
Traditional wooden vessels link the harbour with inter-island freight trade.
The port’s history reaches back to the twelfth century.
Useful to know
Follow port staff directions about where visitors may stand and walk.
Observe vessels from permitted areas; boarding and cargo zones need separate permission.
