Ginkaku-ji
Ginkaku-ji combines an un-silvered pavilion with a meticulously maintained garden of sand, moss and hillside paths, reflecting the refined culture associated with shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa’s retirement villa.
Why go
The name draws attention to the pavilion, but the garden gives this eastern Kyoto temple much of its depth. Examine the sculpted sand, then climb the circuit for an overview of the buildings and surrounding greenery. It pairs naturally with the Philosopher’s Path, provided you leave enough time for the garden rather than passing through quickly.
What to look for
The Silver Pavilion without silver cladding
Sculpted sand garden forms
Moss and elevated hillside garden views
Useful to know
