Hamarikyu Gardens
Hama-rikyu pairs an Edo-period landscape with Tokyo’s modern skyline, centring its garden walk on a seawater pond whose level changes with the tide and a teahouse reached by bridges.
Why go
The tidal pond distinguishes this garden from other Tokyo retreats. Walk around the water to see the Nakajima teahouse and surrounding towers from changing angles, then add seasonal planting to the circuit. The contrast between a former shogunal and imperial retreat and the modern waterfront makes the setting especially memorable.
What to look for
Tide Inlet Pond connected to the sea
Nakajima teahouse on the central pond
Spring plum and cherry trees and autumn foliage
Useful to know
Allow time for tea if the teahouse is part of your plan.
Leave enough time to complete the pond circuit before the garden closes.
Shiodome Station is an official nearby access point, about seven minutes away on foot.
