Kenroku-en

Kanazawa’s Kenrokuen is an extensive designed strolling garden of ponds, stone lanterns, bridges and carefully maintained trees, revealing different compositions as you move between its paths.

Kenroku-en

Why go

The garden rewards attention to framing: a lantern, bridge or pine appears within a larger arrangement of water and terrain. Its name invokes six landscape qualities, but visitors need no specialist knowledge to enjoy the balance. Take a broad circuit rather than stopping only at the most photographed pond viewpoint.

What to look for

  • Kotojitoro lantern and Kasumigaike pond
  • Carefully shaped pines and seasonal tree supports
  • Linked strolling paths and water features

Useful to know

  • Allow 90 minutes or more for an unhurried circuit.
  • Paths can be slippery in rain or winter weather.
  • Explore beyond the famous lantern viewpoint to see changing compositions.
