Shibuya Crossing

Shibuya’s scramble crossing turns a busy station junction into a brief shared pedestrian stage, surrounded by illuminated screens and streets that lead into Tokyo’s shopping and entertainment culture.

Shibuya Crossing

Why go

Watch a complete traffic-light cycle from the pavement, then cross with the crowd to experience the junction’s changing rhythm. Its interest comes from ordinary urban movement rather than a scheduled performance. The surrounding district gives the stop substance: continue into nearby shopping streets rather than making a special journey solely for one photograph.

What to look for

  • Simultaneous pedestrian crossings
  • Large screens and illuminated façades
  • The station-side meeting area around Hachiko

Useful to know

  • Cross only when the pedestrian signal permits.
  • Take photographs from a safe pavement position without blocking the flow.
  • Choose your station exit carefully: Shibuya’s station complex is extensive.
