Shirakawa-go Ogimachi

Ogimachi is the best-known Shirakawa-go village, where steep thatched gassho-style roofs, cultivated land and mountain surroundings express a distinctive living settlement within a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape.

Shirakawa-go Ogimachi

Why go

The roofs are striking, but the village’s importance lies in the relationship between houses, climate and rural livelihoods. Walk the lanes respectfully and enter only homes explicitly open to visitors. A viewpoint helps reveal the settlement pattern, while time at ground level makes clear that the landscape remains inhabited and maintained.

What to look for

  • Gassho-style thatched farmhouses
  • Village lanes and cultivated landscape
  • Elevated overview of the settlement

Useful to know

  • Leave private homes and fields undisturbed while exploring the village.
  • Allow time at ground level as well as at the elevated viewpoint.
  • Winter walking and intercity transfers need a flexible return plan.
