Shukkei-en

Shukkeien is a compact Hiroshima strolling garden where a pond, bridges and miniature landscape compositions create a calm circuit within easy reach of the city center.

Shukkei-en

Why go

Its small scale is part of the pleasure: crossing bridges and changing viewpoints reveals scenes that appear larger than the garden itself. After the demanding exhibits at the Peace Memorial Museum, this deliberately composed landscape offers a different pace, though it also belongs to Hiroshima’s history of destruction and recovery.

What to look for

  • Central pond and bridge views
  • Miniature landscape compositions
  • Seasonal planting along the circuit

Useful to know

  • Plan about an hour for the main pond circuit.
  • Some paths and bridges are uneven or stepped.
  • Take time at successive viewpoints instead of crossing the garden directly.
