Tokyo National Museum

In Ueno Park, Japan’s oldest national museum brings together Japanese art and archaeology with Asian collections across several buildings, rewarding a selective visit through its changing displays.

Why go

Choose the Japanese Gallery for an introduction to artistic traditions, then add archaeology or the Gallery of Horyuji Treasures according to your interests. The campus format makes comparisons between sculpture, paintings, armour and ceramics possible without requiring you to cover every building. Rotating exhibits also mean the online exhibition list is useful preparation.

What to look for

  • Japanese Gallery in the Honkan
  • Asian collections in the Toyokan
  • The separate Gallery of Horyuji Treasures

Useful to know

  • Enter through the Main Gate; allow time for security screening.
  • Leave suitcases elsewhere: they are prohibited inside.
  • Check Monday holiday exceptions and the current gallery list before selecting a date.
