Mount of Olives

The Mount of Olives gives you a broad view back across the Kidron Valley to Jerusalem's Old City. Its churches, Jewish cemetery and hillside paths make it a substantial outdoor visit rather than one viewpoint.

Mount of Olives

Why go

From the eastern ridge, the Old City's sacred landmarks sit together in one panorama. Moving down the slope then connects that distant view to particular places, including Dominus Flevit and Gethsemane. The Jewish cemetery adds another long history to the hillside: burial here reaches back to biblical times, and the graves remain a visible part of the landscape.

What to look for

  • From the ridge, look across the Kidron Valley toward the Dome of the Rock and the Old City skyline.
  • The extensive Jewish cemetery occupies much of the slope.
  • Dominus Flevit and Gethsemane mark different points on the descent toward the valley.

Useful to know

  • Give the outdoor viewpoints daylight and allow extra time for the hillside rather than treating all the churches as one stop.
  • Check each church's access separately before building a descent around interior visits.
