Mosque of Omar
Bethlehem's Old City mosque faces the Church of the Nativity across Manger Square. It adds an essential view of the city's Muslim life to a visit often centered on the Christian shrine.
Why go
The mosque is named for Caliph Umar, whose visit to Bethlehem became part of local tradition. The present building dates from the nineteenth century, so it should not be mistaken for a structure from his lifetime. Its position beside the Nativity church makes the square a concise place to see two religious histories in the same civic setting.
