This synagogue helps explain why the Jewish Quarter contains both historic sites and recent reconstruction. Completed in the nineteenth century, it served Jerusalem's Hasidic community until it was destroyed during the 1948 war. Its renewed exterior is the dependable sight to seek out today. Seeing it alongside the Hurva Synagogue makes the quarter's two different rebuilding stories easier to compare.
What to look for
The reconstructed synagogue rises above nearby Jewish Quarter streets.
Its exterior can be compared with the rebuilt Hurva Synagogue.
Useful to know
Plan on viewing the exterior; current general interior access has not been established.
