Why go
This orientation helps you decide which Johannesburg to spend time with: the Central Business District's commercial architecture, Soweto's political and family history, or Braamfontein's museums. Understanding the city's spread helps you build a visit around related places instead of collecting distant landmarks in one day.
The full story
Johannesburg is the provincial capital of Gauteng, and its familiar names include Jozi, Jo'burg and eGoli. The mineral-rich Witwatersrand explains its location: gold drew people and investment to an inland settlement that became an economic centre. Unlike cities organised around a waterfront, Johannesburg asks you to orient yourself through its districts and their different functions. Downtown, the Carlton Centre and neighbouring office towers express the city's commercial scale. Soweto, whose name comes from South Western Townships, belongs to Johannesburg's wider urban geography; its history also reflects the segregation that shaped where people could live. Vilakazi Street and Mandela House offer a more focused introduction than trying to cover the whole area. Johannesburg is not one of South Africa's three capital cities, but the Constitutional Court stands here at Constitution Hill. That distinction gives a visit to the former prison precinct a national significance beyond the city's business role.
