Why go
The visit connects major fossil discoveries with the limestone setting in which they were found. Seeing excavation locations gives names such as Mrs. Ples and Little Foot a physical context, while the fossil preparation laboratory shows another stage between discovery and scientific interpretation.
What to look for
- The guided descent passes cave formations and important excavation locations.
- The surface exhibition interprets the site’s early human discoveries.
- The fossil preparation laboratory adds a view of work beyond excavation.
The full story
Sterkfontein means “strong spring” in Afrikaans. Its limestone caves near Krugersdorp belong to the Cradle of Humankind, where discoveries changed the study of human ancestry. Limestone mining in the late nineteenth century brought fossils to attention before systematic scientific excavation followed. In 1936, work associated with Raymond Dart and Robert Broom at the University of the Witwatersrand uncovered an adult australopithecine. The find strengthened the case for the importance of African fossils in understanding human origins. Broom’s 1947 skull discovery became known as Mrs. Ples, despite uncertainty over the individual’s sex. The later discovery of the near-complete skeleton called Little Foot offered a different kind of evidence from an isolated skull. Together, these finds explain why the excavation sites matter as much as the cave formations. The significance lies in the fossils and their geological setting, rather than simply in descending underground.
Useful to know
- Allow 60–90 minutes for the visit, plus a separately planned road transfer northwest of Johannesburg.
- Expect stairs, uneven ground and low, narrow passages underground; consider the surface exhibition instead if needed.
- Check tour availability before the journey, especially during holiday periods.
