Why go
Use the river and the hills to understand the city before choosing sights. The older right bank holds the historic urban landscape, while Khreshchatyk and the civic squares offer a different view of Kyiv through architecture, public space and the history of Ukrainian independence.
What to look for
- The Dnipro separates the hilly western right bank from the lower eastern left bank.
- Khreshchatyk, Maidan Nezalezhnosti and European Square provide distinct anchors for understanding central Kyiv.
- The name Kyiv follows Ukrainian transliteration; Kiev is a spelling often encountered in older English books and maps.
Useful to know
- Check the change in elevation as well as distance when planning walks on the right bank.
- Group nearby sights before adding a river crossing; the two banks cover very different terrain.
