Staying Safe on Ko Samui

Ko Samui's main practical risks come from road travel, exposed beach or boat plans, and unclear transport terms. A few checks before setting out make the island easier to navigate.

Staying Safe on Ko Samui

Why go

The ring road and hilly interior make road choices part of a real island day. A motorbike may look convenient, but the older guidance describes road hazards and rental disputes; choose one only with the right licence, skill and insurance. Keep valuables with you through mainland to island transfers, and assess sea conditions before a boat or swim.

Useful to know

  • Wear a helmet on a motorbike and do not ride after drinking.
  • Check licence, insurance and vehicle condition before signing a rental agreement.
  • Keep valuables in hand luggage during bus, pier and ferry transfers.
