Sri Maha Mariamman Temple
Kuala Lumpur’s oldest Hindu temple pairs an active place of worship with a richly modelled South Indian gateway beside Chinatown.
Why go
The temple gives architectural detail and living religious practice equal weight. Its gateway introduces a dense cast of Hindu deities, while the prayer hall, shrines and silver chariot connect the building to daily worship and the annual Thaipusam procession through the city.
What to look for
The tiered Raja Gopuram is crowded with figures of Hindu gods.
Pillars inside the temple carry images of the eight forms of Lakshmi.
A silver chariot kept here is used in the Thaipusam procession to Batu Caves.
Useful to know
Treat the temple as an active place of worship and give prayer areas space.
Combine it with nearby Chinatown rather than planning a separate cross-city trip.
