Arashiyama

Arashiyama combines a river landscape and wooded hills with temple grounds and bamboo paths, offering several distinct walks in western Kyoto beyond the district’s busiest photographed stretch.

Arashiyama

Why go

Give the river and surrounding landscape as much attention as the bamboo. The district works best as a half-day that combines a temple, a grove walk and a riverside pause rather than a hurried crossing of Kyoto for one picture. Nearby Tenryu-ji provides historical and garden context for the scenery around it.

What to look for

  • Togetsukyo bridge and river views
  • The bamboo grove’s tall green canopy
  • Temple gardens against the wooded hills

Useful to know

  • Start with one side of the district and build a walking loop.
  • Budget time for transport from central Kyoto.
  • Carry water and allow for outdoor walking in heat or rain.
