Fushimi Inari-taisha

Kyoto’s head shrine of Inari joins a ceremonial precinct to a sacred mountain, where closely spaced vermilion torii lead through woodland and smaller worship sites beyond the famous lower tunnels.

Fushimi Inari-taisha

Why go

Walk beyond the first photogenic stretch if you want to understand the shrine’s mountain character. Inariyama contains smaller shrines, worship stones and former sacred sites, so the route remains a religious landscape throughout. The shrine’s connection with harvests and prosperity also gives meaning to the donations and inscriptions surrounding the visitor.

What to look for

  • Senbon Torii gateways
  • Five deities enshrined in the main sanctuary
  • Inariyama’s smaller shrines and worship stones

Useful to know

  • Choose a turnaround point before starting the climb.
  • Carry water and wear shoes suited to stepped mountain paths.
  • Pause for photographs without obstructing worshippers passing through the torii.
