Gion

Gion’s streets preserve the scale of Kyoto’s traditional entertainment districts, with wooden townhouses, teahouses and canal-side corners set within a working neighbourhood rather than a single enclosed attraction.

Gion

Why go

Walk slowly and pay attention to façades, lanes and the transitions between busy roads and intimate streets. Gion’s appeal is its lived-in townscape and cultural associations, not a guaranteed encounter with performers. A respectful walk after visiting Higashiyama temples can connect the city’s sacred hillside with its historic social and entertainment spaces.

What to look for

  • Traditional wooden façades
  • Hanamikoji’s teahouse streetscape
  • Shirakawa’s canal-side atmosphere

Useful to know

  • Respect private lanes and posted access or photography restrictions.
  • Do not stop or follow geiko and maiko for photographs.
  • Keep voices low near houses and businesses, especially in the evening.
