Ryōan-ji

Ryoan-ji’s celebrated dry landscape arranges fifteen rocks within raked white gravel, inviting sustained observation from the veranda before a contrasting walk through the temple’s larger pond garden.

Ryōan-ji

Why go

Sit and look rather than trying to solve the rock garden as a puzzle with one official answer. Its restraint makes small differences in placement, moss and texture unusually noticeable. The surrounding grounds and stone basin offer a second register of garden design, turning a famous image into a fuller temple visit.

What to look for

  • Fifteen-rock dry garden
  • The veranda’s framed viewing position
  • Stone basin and the surrounding pond grounds

Useful to know

  • Arrive near opening for a better chance of a quieter view.
  • Allow time to sit before continuing through the grounds.
  • Use footwear that is easy to remove for the temple viewing area.
