Why go
Understanding the road circuit helps you group visits on the same shore. Route 89 links west-shore parks and Tahoe City, while Route 28 connects the northern communities with the eastern shore. Those connections let you compare a focused outing with a drive around more of the basin.
The full story
Route 89 follows the western shore past Camp Richardson, Emerald Bay State Park, D. L. Bliss State Park and Meeks Bay before reaching Tahoe City. This is the road to consider when your priorities are the west-shore parks rather than the northern communities. Beyond Tahoe City, it turns away from the lake toward Truckee. Route 28 carries the circuit east from Tahoe City through Kings Beach and Crystal Bay to Incline Village. It continues down the eastern shore to meet US 50 near Spooner Lake. US 50 serves the southern side of the lake and part of its eastern edge. Most roads into and around the basin are two-lane mountain roads. Treat the circuit as a framework for choosing stops: a long list spread across opposite shores means more driving between visits.
Useful to know
- Group Emerald Bay and other west-shore stops along Route 89.
- Check official road conditions before committing to the shore circuit.
