Why go
A map becomes more useful once Tahoe City, South Lake Tahoe and Stateline have distinct positions in your mind. The lake’s perimeter is about 72 miles (116 km), so nearby-looking shores can involve a substantial circuit. Its watershed also connects a beach visit to streams, mountain slopes and the Truckee River far beyond the basin.
The full story
South Lake Tahoe occupies the southern shore beside Stateline, Nevada. Tahoe City sits on the northwest shore, where the Truckee River begins. These are useful anchors for understanding a lake shared by two states: roughly two-thirds of its shoreline lies in California. The water comes from 63 tributaries as well as rain and snow falling directly onto the lake. Surrounding slopes funnel runoff toward Tahoe, and the drainage divide follows much the same high ground as the Tahoe Rim Trail. That connection helps explain why events well above the beaches can affect the water below. At Tahoe City, a dam controls the outlet and lake level. The Truckee flows northeast through Reno to Pyramid Lake, which has no outlet. Much of Tahoe’s water leaves another way, through evaporation from its broad surface. Looking across the lake, you are seeing both a mountain basin and the starting point of a longer river system.
