Why go
An arrival route makes more sense once you distinguish Tahoe City from the southern shore and the northern communities farther east. The main roads approach the lake from different directions, so choosing a shore first gives your journey a clear destination instead of treating Lake Tahoe as one arrival point.
The full story
For a journey from Sacramento or the San Francisco Bay Area to Tahoe City, the road approach uses Interstate 80 toward Truckee, then Route 89 south to the lake. Tahoe City is where that approach meets the western and northern shore roads. From Reno, Interstate 80 heads west toward Truckee, with Route 267 providing an approach south to the lake. Nevada Route 431 is another road into the basin from the Reno side. US 50 provides a separate approach serving the southern side of Lake Tahoe. Match these corridors to your accommodation before selecting the rest of the journey. The final approach involves mountain roads rather than a simple continuation of freeway driving. In winter, check official road conditions and vehicle requirements for the entire route before setting out; do not base the decision on conditions at your starting point alone.
