Why go
Cusco's streets let you read two periods together: Inca stonework survives beneath and beside Spanish colonial architecture. The city also provides a base for nearby archaeological sites such as Sacsayhuamán and for onward travel through the Sacred Valley, but its altitude and distance make it a separate destination from Lima.
What to look for
- Inca masonry remains visible in the historic city.
- Colonial buildings include the Cathedral of Santo Domingo.
- Sacsayhuamán lies near the city.
Useful to know
- Plan Cusco as a separate Andean stay rather than adding it to a Lima walking route.
- Account for the city's altitude of roughly 3,400 meters when planning physical activity.
