Plaza San Martín
A formal square in Lima’s historic centre honours independence leader José de San Martín. Visit for the central monument and the planned rhythm of its surrounding facades.
The plaza offers a useful contrast with Plaza Mayor: a commemorative space framed by twentieth-century buildings rather than the city’s founding civic square. Walk its edges to see how the arcades, Hotel Bolívar and other facades create a coherent setting around the monument.
What to look for
A monument to José de San Martín stands at the centre.
Hotel Bolívar and arcaded buildings frame the square.
The surrounding facades were built in stages during the twentieth century.
Useful to know
Approach along Jirón de la Unión if combining it with Plaza Mayor.
Walk the perimeter to read the buildings as an ensemble.
