Why go
The appeal lies as much in the setting as in the ride: the cars climb 245 metres along Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo, framed by tightly packed façades. Opened in 1892, the line shows how Lisbon adapted mechanical transport to its hills.
What to look for
- The rails run straight up Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo between close-set residential façades.
- The lower station is tucked behind a façade marked “Ascensor da Bica” on Rua de São Paulo.
- The 1892 line was designed by Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard and is protected as a National Monument.
Useful to know
- Check Carris live notices before relying on the funicular for the climb.
- If service is unavailable, use the operator’s stated alternative or approach the street on foot only if steep paving suits you.
- Continue from the upper end toward Calçada do Combro rather than immediately retracing the same slope.
