Padrão dos Descobrimentos

Come for the elevated sweep across Belém and the Tagus, then examine how a 20th-century monument staged Portugal’s maritime past.

Padrão dos Descobrimentos

Why go

Few stops explain Belém’s layout as clearly. The terrace aligns the river, Belém Tower, Praça do Império and Jerónimos Monastery, while the sculpted prow below presents a deliberately heroic image of the navigators, patrons and chroniclers associated with Portuguese expansion.

What to look for

  • The terrace looks across the Tagus and back toward Belém Tower and Praça do Império.
  • A pavement compass rose is easiest to understand from above.
  • Thirty-three historical figures line the monument’s sloping, prow-like sides.

The full story

Padrão dos Descobrimentos began as a temporary centerpiece for the Portuguese World Exhibition of 1940. Architect Cottinelli Telmo and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida shaped it as a ship’s prow crowded with figures from the history of Portuguese exploration. The temporary structure was demolished in 1943, but the Estado Novo later commissioned a permanent, enlarged version for the 1960 commemoration of Henry the Navigator’s death. Built in concrete with rose-colored stone and limestone sculpture, it reflects the regime’s romanticized presentation of empire rather than the fabric of the 15th or 16th centuries it celebrates. That distinction changes how the monument reads: it is evidence of both maritime memory and 20th-century political storytelling. From the terrace, its placement becomes clear, facing Praça do Império and Jerónimos Monastery across the road while commanding the Tagus riverfront.

Useful to know

  • Use the elevator-accessed terrace for orientation before walking west toward Belém Tower.
  • Study the pavement compass rose from above, then revisit it at ground level to grasp its scale.
  • Treat the exposed riverfront as a weather-dependent stop, especially in strong sun or wind.
