Why go
Around Angers, Anjou brings rosé and still wines into the choice; around Saumur, Chenin blanc sparkling wine and Saumur-Champigny reds stand out. This is the middle-Loire area for comparing styles rather than seeking one signature bottle. The town names are helpful clues to what is in the glass.
The full story
Anjou around Angers has a wide wine identity. Rosé d’Anjou and Cabernet d’Anjou are familiar names, while Chenin blanc appears in whites and other red grapes also have a place. Saumur adds a different emphasis: sparkling wine based on Chenin blanc and red Saumur-Champigny built around Cabernet franc. That gives a traveler two useful comparisons. First, taste Chenin blanc as a still wine and as a sparkling one. Then compare a Saumur-Champigny red with Cabernet franc from Chinon or Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil farther east. The grape may be shared, but the regional expression is not identical. Chenin has been established in this part of the Loire for many centuries, and its old local names speak to that long history. The practical point is simple: do not let the Anjou-Saumur heading suggest a single flavour. Decide whether your interest is rosé, Chenin or Cabernet franc, and let that guide the stop.
