Why does Brissac rise so high above its fortress past?

Brissac pairs the memory of a medieval stronghold with a tall, later residence. Its height and changed façade reflect rebuilding after damage during the Wars of Religion.

Why go

The château makes a political decision visible in stone. Charles II de Cossé supported Henry of Navarre, then received the damaged property and funds to rebuild it after Henry became king. The seven-storey result gives Brissac a very different profile from lower Loire châteaux.

The full story

The Counts of Anjou established a castle at Brissac in the medieval period, and Pierre de Brézé rebuilt it in the 15th century. The Cossé family acquired it under Francis I. During the Wars of Religion, the fortress was badly damaged and demolition was considered. Charles II de Cossé sided with Henry of Navarre; once Henry became King Henry IV, he rewarded Cossé with the property, a ducal title and money for reconstruction. The work begun in the early 17th century produced the château's unusually high, seven-storey form and a façade shaped by a later architectural taste. The site was again damaged during the French Revolution, and restoration began in the 19th century. Brissac therefore reads as a sequence of survival and rebuilding, not a single intact period. Its tall front is the clearest sign of the family's effort to turn a damaged fortress into a grand residence.
