Santa Monica and Malibu Coast

Walk from Third Street Promenade to Santa Monica Pier and the beach, then continue selectively toward Malibu and Surfrider Beach if traffic and daylight allow.

Santa Monica and Malibu Coast

Why go

Start on Third Street Promenade, then cross the bluff toward Santa Monica Pier and the broad state beach. These stops form a coherent car-light core with shops, public space and ocean views; Pacific Park is an optional amusement layer. Malibu changes the day completely because the coast becomes dispersed and traffic can erase the benefit of adding distance. Continue to Surfrider Beach only when conditions support it, and treat Malibu as a scenic extension rather than another walking district. Travelers who want more sand time should remain in Santa Monica.

Useful to know

  • Keep Pacific Park optional because ride operations vary.
  • Finish in Santa Monica if traffic, marine weather or daylight makes Malibu impractical.
