Downtown Los Angeles
Downtown concentrates civic landmarks, historic districts and major cultural venues, but its useful clusters are separated by several busy blocks rather than one continuous center.
Why go
Spend time here to understand how Los Angeles grew from the old plaza into a modern civic and cultural core. Olvera Street, Union Station, City Hall and Walt Disney Concert Hall create a strong sequence, while Little Tokyo and Chinatown work better as deliberate extensions than incidental detours.
What to look for
Compare the old plaza and rail station with the Civic Center skyline.
Use Grand Avenue to read the cityʼs newer cultural architecture.
Useful to know
Group the plaza, Union Station and City Hall before moving uphill to Grand Avenue.
Use rail or a short ride between clusters when heat or traffic makes the walk tiring.
