A busy room can use up your attention before you have looked at anything. Pause long enough to decide whether the work matters to you today. Waiting, shortening a stop and moving on are all reasonable choices.

When there is a queue

Compare the wait with the time and energy you have left. If you stay, choose one detail you want to notice when your turn comes. Keep the queue moving and follow staff instructions so everyone can have a look.

When the work is absent

Check the title and room number, then ask staff or an information desk to confirm its location. Works can be away, and gallery displays can change. You can still use the rest of a visit if the open passages allow it.

When a room is closed

Use the signed alternative or ask staff how to reach your next stop. Skipping an artwork does not make a closed room available as a passage. Do not try to recover a route by following room numbers alone.

Before you run out of energy

Take a pause in a permitted resting area and decide how much more you want to see. Check the closing and room-clearance times. Plan any break outside carefully: leaving the museum is final.
