Start with one question that interests you. Would you like to meet some of the museum’s best-known works, spend time with ancient Egypt, or discover the building beneath the paintings? Each choice gives you a manageable visit with room to stop and look. The Louvre has changed its purpose several times. A fortress protecting Paris became a royal residence, and the public museum opened in 1793. Those different lives remain around you. You can stand beside an old defensive wall, look up at a royal ballroom and enter a gallery filled with paintings, all within the same museum. Choose a route, then give the things along it your attention. You don’t need to see everything to have a visit worth remembering.
