Take in the room before settling on one painting. Let your eye move across the walls and up into the space above them. A room like this brings people together around pictures, and for generations that shared act of looking helped shape artists’ lives.
After a fire in 1661, the architect Louis Le Vau rebuilt this space. From 1692 it was used by the Royal Academy, the institution that helped organise artistic training and recognition in France. Public exhibitions held here became known as Salons, taking their name from the room.
Imagine an artist waiting to hear how a painting had been received. Visitors looked, compared and talked. Critics turned those reactions into words. An exhibition could help establish a reputation. The pictures had an audience whose judgments travelled beyond the palace.
You are looking and comparing too. One painting catches your attention before another and a detail makes you stay. Choose something you can see clearly on the wall. Give it a little time and notice whether your first response changes before you move on.
