Getting to Know Pisa

Pisa's leaning tower draws attention, but the city also has Arno bridges, churches, palaces and an old university tradition rooted beyond Piazza del Duomo.

Why go

Use the cathedral square as the opening chapter, then follow Pisa's civic and riverside fabric. Its former maritime power explains the scale of the monuments, while the university and other historic churches show a city that kept developing beyond its most photographed landmark.

The full story

Pisa stands on the Arno, close to the Tyrrhenian coast. Its best-known monument is a bell tower, one part of a cathedral complex whose size reflects the city's past as a maritime republic. That context changes the experience of the Piazza del Duomo: the cathedral, baptistery and Campo Santo deserve attention alongside the tower. The city's river setting offers another view of Pisa, with bridges, palaces and churches spread beyond the northern monumental square. Pisa also has a long academic history; the University of Pisa traces its roots to the medieval period. Taken together, these strands suggest two different visits. A brief stop can concentrate on the cathedral ensemble, while a fuller day can follow the Arno and look at civic and university buildings as well. The second approach makes Pisa feel like a lived city with several chapters rather than a single landmark.
