San Giusto, Lucca
This compact Lucca church is a good short stop for its striped Romanesque front and richly carved central doorway. The exterior gives the clearest payoff if entry is unavailable.
San Giusto rewards close looking rather than a long visit. The stacked loggias and carved figures at the portal show how much invention Luccan builders put into a small façade, while the later interior offers a contrast in style. Its carved doorway is best appreciated at arm’s length.
What to look for
Black and white bands frame two small superimposed loggias.
Carved supporting figures and lions crowd the central portal.
The interior was remodelled in the Baroque period.
Useful to know
Pause at the main doorway to pick out the figures and plant motifs.
Check current church access before relying on an interior visit.
