From the Lyon World / Areas

La Croix-Rousse

A hill district shaped by Lyon's silk workers, with tall-windowed buildings, traboules, steep stairs and broad views over the city.

La Croix-Rousse

Why go

Croix-Rousse is where industrial history becomes visible in the streets. Canut buildings were designed around large looms, and passages connect blocks across the slope. The walk feels markedly different from formal Presqu'île, but repeated climbs make it better for travelers comfortable with uneven terrain.

What to look for

  • Tall windows built to light silk-weaving rooms
  • Traboules and stairs cutting across the slope
  • Views opening toward Presqu'île and Fourvière

Useful to know

  • Start on the plateau and walk downhill if you want an easier route.
  • Use only publicly marked traboules and keep noise down near homes.
