Driving in Macau
Macau’s compact size and dense central streets make a rental car a selective choice. Traffic runs on the left, and a drive across the mainland border needs separate planning.
Why go
For most short trips between peninsula landmarks, walking or transit avoids the complexity of driving through a small, built-up city. A car may suit a specific wider itinerary, but it changes the planning burden: road signs use Chinese and Portuguese, traffic keeps left, and crossing into mainland China involves additional vehicle and licence requirements. Check those rules before reserving a car.
Useful to know
Decide whether the trip truly needs a car before arranging a rental.
Plan for left-side traffic and bilingual road signs.
Confirm current licence, insurance and cross-border requirements with the relevant authorities and rental company.
