Walking around Macau

Walking works well in the compact historic streets of the Macau Peninsula, especially around Senado Square. Hills, steps and indirect lanes make distance less predictable than it looks on a map.

Why go

On the peninsula, walking links squares, churches and temples without repeatedly circling one-way roads. The patterned paving near Senado Square is part of the experience, but the old centre also climbs through steep lanes. Cotai is a different proposition: its resort blocks and broad roads make a casual walk between districts less rewarding.

Useful to know

  • Link nearby peninsula sights on foot, then allow extra time for hills and steps.
  • Cross carefully where narrow historic streets meet traffic.
  • Use transport for longer moves toward Cotai rather than assuming it walks like the old centre.
