Lou Kau bought the land in the late nineteenth century; his eldest son, Lou Lim Iok, began building the garden in 1904, and it was completed in 1925. Its Suzhou-inspired design compresses paths, rocks, water and planting into a compact landscape that rewards slow observation. The garden differs sharply from nearby European-style parks, making it a useful comparison.
