Why go
After retreating from Cusco, Manco Inca established a new center in the Vilcabamba region. The resistance lasted until the Spanish took the city in 1572. Seeing its remains in the forest gives that final chapter a physical setting, far removed from the polished stone and crowded routes of Machu Picchu.
What to look for
- Archaeological remains lie in a forest setting in the San Miguel basin.
- The site is associated with the historical Old Vilcabamba, distinct from the later colonial town.
Useful to know
- Treat the pedestrian approach as a dedicated multiday trip, not a Machu Picchu side visit.
- Confirm route conditions and present-day visitor access through local planning before departure.
