Gran Caverna (Temple of the Moon)
This cave-side Inca structure lies on the steep north slope of Huayna Picchu. It is a specialized Machu Picchu route stop, with access that needs its own ticket check.
Why go
Here, worked stone meets a natural cave rather than a freestanding terrace or temple wall. That combination makes the site distinctive within the Machu Picchu landscape. The traditional name suggests a lunar purpose, but the name alone does not establish how the space was used.
What to look for
Fine Inca masonry sits against a natural cave on Huayna Picchu's north slope.
The cave and built walls form one architectural space.
Useful to know
Check availability of the Gran Caverna route before planning this visit.
Do not assume a Waynapicchu summit ticket includes the cave route.
