Maras Salt Pans

Maras’s salt ponds form a dense pattern down the valley wall near Moray. The working landscape is best appreciated from permitted viewing areas.

Maras Salt Pans

Why go

The small evaporation pools show an ongoing salt-making tradition in a dramatic setting. Their texture and color differ entirely from Moray’s circular terraces, giving the Maras–Moray outing two distinct reasons to travel rather than one repeated landscape stop. The ponds also reveal the slope beneath them.

What to look for

  • Hundreds of small salt ponds step down a steep valley wall.

Useful to know

  • Use designated viewpoints and check current access locally before leaving Moray or Maras village.
