Why go
The scale of the thrones and the relationship between brotherhood neighborhoods, churches and the official route distinguish Málaga's processions. Even one carefully chosen passage can reveal more than chasing several processions through blocked streets. This distinction gives Holy Week in Málaga a clearer place in a realistic Málaga plan.
The full story
During Holy Week, Málaga's brotherhoods carry monumental thrones bearing images of Christ and the Virgin through the city. Large teams of bearers move them beneath long poles, accompanied by music, incense and crowds. Processions begin and end at different brotherhood houses or churches before joining sections of the official route, so the same street can alternate between intense activity and waiting. Exact routes, times, security measures and weather decisions belong to the current official program. Choose a viewing area with an escape route rather than standing at the narrowest junction. Bring only what you can carry comfortably and expect transport diversions. If you need step-free movement or personal space, observe from wider streets and avoid peak passages. The event is devotional as well as public: keep voices and photography respectful when a throne pauses or enters a religious setting.
