Why go
Most central landmarks fit a comfortable walk, while the castle, western stations and eastern beaches do not share the same scale. Reading slope and exposure before departure makes a walking or cycling day far more realistic. This distinction gives Walking and Cycling in Málaga a clearer place in a realistic Málaga plan.
The full story
Walking is the clearest way to connect Atarazanas, the cathedral, Picasso sites, Roman Theatre and Alcazaba entrance. Streets in the core are compact, and repeated vehicle trips often add little. Gibralfaro is the exception: the ascent is steep and exposed, so a bus or taxi uphill with a downhill walk may suit more travelers. The port promenade and seafront support longer, flatter movement, but distances grow as you continue east toward Pedregalejo and El Palo. Cycling works better on suitable coastal corridors than in crowded pedestrian lanes. Follow current signs, dismount where required and secure the bicycle properly. Summer heat changes every estimate; move the hill and open waterfront away from the strongest afternoon sun. Comfortable shoes matter on polished central paving, fortress steps and uneven historic sites. Build the day around one demanding leg, not several.
