Why go
Stortorget gives you a compact introduction to Malmö’s civic and trading past. The square was laid out in the 1530s, and its edges still bring together Malmö Rådhus, the Jörgen Kock house and Apoteket Lejonet. Looking around the perimeter is more rewarding than treating it as a photo stop for the statue alone.
What to look for
- The equestrian statue of Karl X Gustav stands in the open square.
- Malmö Rådhus forms one of Stortorget’s prominent facades.
- Jörgen Kock’s house and Apoteket Lejonet show two different historic frontages.
Useful to know
- Walk the square’s edges to see the buildings as well as the central statue.
- Treat the square as a public outdoor stop; nearby interiors and events follow their own schedules.
