Getting Around Malta

Buses, ferries, taxis and cars link Malta's small distances, but detours, traffic and transfers can make travel slower than a map suggests.

Getting Around Malta

Why go

Good transport planning protects time for Valletta, Mdina, Gozo and the coast. Many bus journeys converge on Valletta, and routes to popular sights can be busy or indirect. Ferries and taxis can simplify some crossings, while a car gives reach but means driving on the left and managing local traffic.

The full story

Malta has no operating railway, so most independent travel relies on buses, ferries, taxis or a car. The bus network is useful for reaching towns and visitor areas, but many routes pass through Valletta and can involve waits, changes and traffic. Leave extra time when combining distant parts of the island, especially if a ferry connection is involved. Taxis offer a direct alternative for short hops or a planned half-day circuit, but agree the arrangement in advance and use current official fare information. Drivers should remember that traffic keeps to the left. Sea services link Malta with Gozo, while travel to Comino depends on boat operations and weather. Check live timetables before setting a fixed plan around an island crossing.
