Why go
It helps explain local routines beyond monuments. Football attracts intense attention, but boċċi clubs provide a slower, distinctly Maltese variation on boules played by three-person teams on coarse sand. Water polo becomes especially prominent in summer, while sailing and horse racing connect sport to the islands' sea and feast traditions.
The full story
Football is widely followed in Malta, including English and Italian matches as well as the national game. For a more local spectacle, boċċi is Malta's version of boules: three-person teams play on a smooth surface covered with coarse-grained sand, and clubs are found around the islands. Water polo has a strong summer following in both Malta and Gozo and helped lead to Malta's first Olympic appearance in 1928. The annual Middle Sea Race starts and finishes in Malta, circling through the Strait of Messina and past Pantelleria and Lampedusa. Horse racing also has a long local history, including annual bareback races on Saqqajja Hill in Rabat during the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. Match fixtures and race programmes determine what can actually be watched during a visit.
